Miami is a watercraft paradise — Biscayne Bay glass at sunrise, the sandbar at Haulover, mangrove trails in Oleta River, the Keys an hour south. It's also a machine that eats unprotected watercraft. UV cracks kayak hulls and jet ski seats, salt corrodes everything metal, and hurricane season turns unsecured toys into insurance claims. Whether you're a weekend kayaker or a jet ski regular, here's how Miami stores its toys properly.
Why Miami Watercraft Need Real Storage
Four local factors make storage non-optional:
- UV destruction. Miami's UV index hits "extreme" most of the year. Rotomolded kayak hulls chalk and become brittle; jet ski gelcoat fades and seats crack. One summer on an exposed balcony does years of damage.
- Salt corrosion. Jet ski engines, trailers, and hardware corrode fast in salt air — even parked, even unused. Salt is the #1 killer of PWCs in South Florida.
- Theft. Kayaks and jet skis are high-value, portable targets. A kayak on a car rack or a ski on a driveway trailer is an invitation — Miami theft crews know exactly what they're worth.
- Storms. A 25-pound kayak becomes a projectile in tropical-storm winds. Unsecured watercraft in hurricane season threaten your windows and your neighbors'.
Kayak Storage Options in Miami
Kayaks, paddleboards, and canoes are light and awkward — the storage challenge is space shape, not weight:
- 5x10 storage unit ($70-$110/month). Two or three kayaks on a vertical rack, plus paddles, PFDs, and dry bags. The standard answer for apartment dwellers. A 5x5 ($45-$75) works for a single kayak stored diagonally or on end (10+ foot kayaks need the 5x10).
- Shared watercraft racks at facilities. A few Miami facilities near the water (Coconut Grove, North Miami) offer dedicated kayak/SUP rack spaces — $25-$50/month per boat, sometimes with hose access for rinsing.
- Marina dry storage. Some marinas (Dinner Key, Matheson Hammock area) rent rack space for paddle craft — convenient if you launch there anyway.
- Home solutions: If you have garage or balcony space, wall racks work — but balcony storage still cops UV and salt. A UV cover is the minimum.
Jet Ski Storage Options in Miami
PWCs on trailers need real space and real security:
- Outdoor parking spaces ($90-$150/month). Gated facility lots in Doral, Hialeah, and Kendall. Fine for in-season use (you're riding weekly), but add a fitted cover — Miami sun destroys seats and impellers bake in uncovered engine bays.
- Covered spaces ($150-$220/month). Roof protection halves the UV and rain exposure. The right call for skis stored between weekend runs.
- Enclosed 10x20 unit ($220-$340/month). A single or double trailer fits with walk-around room. Total protection from sun, salt, theft, and storms — the winter/off-season answer for skis you care about, and the only option we'd trust June through November unattended.
- Dry-stack at PWC-specific facilities. Miami has a handful of jet ski dry-stack operations (Haulover, Miami River) with forklift launch service — $150-$300/month including launches. Premium price, zero trailer hassle, immediate water access.
Trailer notes: measure total length including tongue (single-ski trailers run 12-14 feet overall) and confirm the facility allows trailer storage. Most do; some charge separately for the trailer space.
The Salt Defense Routine
Miami's golden rule: every ride ends with fresh water. But storage prep goes further:
- Flush the engine (jet skis) with fresh water every saltwater ride — 90 seconds on the hose adapter. Weekly riders who skip this replace exhaust components yearly; flushers get decades.
- Salt-Away or similar treatment on the engine flush and exterior monthly.
- Spray all metal — trailer hardware, latches, hinges — with corrosion inhibitor (WD-40 Specialist, Boeshield) before storage.
- Dry completely before covering. A cover over a wet ski in Miami heat creates a mold terrarium. Seats, footwells, and storage compartments must be bone dry.
- Fuel stabilizer for storage over 30 days; battery tender for storage over 60.
- Kayaks: rinse inside and out, dry fully, store on their side or upside-down on padded racks — never flat on the hull on hard ground (it oil-cans the plastic), and never by the grab loops (they stretch).
Hurricane Season Rules for Watercraft
June 1 to November 30, additional rules apply:
- Kayaks and paddleboards come inside — unit, garage, or at minimum strapped to something structural in a sheltered location. They are 100% wind projectiles otherwise.
- Jet skis on trailers go to enclosed storage or get tied down — facility tie-down points or ground anchors, cover off (covers become sails), drain plug out, bow up so rainwater drains.
- Retrieve early. Facilities restrict access 24-48 hours before landfall. When a watch is issued, move that day — not tomorrow.
- Insurance check: verify your PWC policy covers named-storm damage at the storage location. Many require the ski to be off the water when a storm enters the box.
